Reference Object Sizes for Screen Calibration

A calibration object must have a known size, a straight edge, and enough room to fit fully on the screen. A standard ID-1 card is convenient, while A4 and US Letter paper give a longer reference on larger displays. If you are not certain what the object is, use a verified custom length instead.

The short answer

Use 85.60 mm for the long edge of a standard ID-1 bank card, 210 mm for the short edge of A4 paper, or 8.5 inches (215.9 mm) for the width of US Letter paper. The complete reference must fit on screen. When it does not, enter a shorter length that you have checked with a real ruler or gauge.

The screen suggestions are practical starting points, not guarantees. Browser controls, display scaling, and calibration scale determine how much of the reference outline actually fits.

Using a credit card or bank card: check that it is really ID-1

Standard ID-1 size

85.60 mm wide × 53.98 mm high. The tool uses the straight 85.60 mm long edge.

Many credit cards, debit cards, and identification cards use the ID-1 format, but “card-sized” is not proof. Hotel keys, gift cards, membership cards, paper cards, and novelty cards may differ. If the card is in a sleeve, remove it. Avoid an edge that is bent, badly worn, or hidden by a phone case lip.

The current ISO/IEC 7810 standard covers the physical dimensions of identification-card formats. ISO’s public definition lists ID-1 at a nominal 85.60 × 53.98 mm.

A4 paper: use the 210 mm short edge

A4 size

210 × 297 mm. The calibration preset uses the shorter 210 mm edge.

A4 works well when a large screen can show the full 210 mm outline. Hold or rest the paper flat without bending it toward the glass. A curled corner or a sheet hanging at an angle makes the endpoints harder to judge.

Do not assume every sheet near a printer is A4. The format belongs to the A-series sizes defined by ISO 216. Packaging, notebooks, trimmed printouts, and borderless prints may not preserve the standard size.

US Letter paper: use the 8.5-inch width

US Letter size

8.5 × 11 inches, equal to 215.9 × 279.4 mm. The preset uses the 8.5-inch width.

US Letter is wider than A4 by 5.9 mm along the short edge. If you choose A4 in the tool but hold up Letter paper, the reference is wrong by about 2.8% before any alignment error is added.

If you are unsure which paper is in front of you, measure it first or check the package. NIST materials identify standard US Letter as 8.5 × 11 inches.

A custom length is often the best phone option

On a phone, even the 85.60 mm card outline may not fit in portrait orientation. A custom reference solves that problem, but only when the entered length is known rather than guessed.

  1. Use a physical ruler, caliper, gauge, or another traceable mark to establish a straight length.
  2. Choose a segment that fits completely inside the calibration panel, such as a clearly marked 40 or 50 mm span.
  3. Enter that exact value and unit in Custom Length.
  4. Align both endpoints, save, and check the result against a second known length.

Avoid coins unless you verify the exact coin

Coin diameter changes by country, denomination, year, wear, and sometimes edition. “A coin” is not a measurement. The same warning applies to bottle caps, keys, batteries, and random cards.

Longer references reduce the percentage impact of the same mistake

Suppose your two endpoints are off by 1 mm overall. That 1 mm is 2% of a 50 mm custom reference, but only about 0.48% of a 210 mm A4 edge.

This does not mean “always use the longest object.” A long reference that is clipped, bent, or hard to hold flat is worse than a shorter reference you can align cleanly. Use the longest reliable edge that fits completely.

Choose by screen, not by habit

Phone

Start with a verified custom length. Try an ID-1 card in landscape only if the whole outline fits.

Tablet or laptop

An ID-1 card is convenient. Use paper only when its full short edge stays visible.

Desktop monitor

A4 or Letter provides a longer check, but a clean ID-1 card can still be easier to hold.

    Change orientation or choose a shorter custom length if either endpoint is clipped.

    Align one end, then the other

    Look straight at the display and keep the reference flat.

    Keep the same screen, browser zoom, orientation, and display settings.

    Verify with another length

    A second reference can reveal a wrong paper type, damaged card, or alignment mistake.

What not to use

  • A reference shown in a photograph or another browser tab—the image may already be scaled.
  • A card inside a thick sleeve, a folded sheet, or an object with a rounded edge you cannot line up.
  • A printed ruler unless you have confirmed the print dialog used 100% or actual size rather than “fit to page.”
  • An object whose dimensions came from memory or an unverified product listing.

Calibration improves an on-screen estimate; it does not turn the display into a certified instrument. Use a physical ruler or caliper when a small error could affect safety, fit, cost, or a required tolerance.
